โดยทั่วๆไปจะแสดงท่าทาง หรือ อารมณ์ ของผู้พูด มีทั้งหมด 24 ตัว
ได้แก่
Is, am, are, was, were, has, have, had, do, does, did,
will, would, shall, should, can, could, may, might, must, need, dare, ought to,
used to
ทำไมถึงเรียกว่า กิริยาช่วย
เหตุที่ต้องเรียกว่ากริยาช่วย
ก็เพราะว่า มันไปรวมอยู่กับกริยาแท้ในประโยคเดียวกัน
ดังนั้นสถานะของมันจึงตกไปเป็นผู้ช่วยให้กับกริยาแท้ตัวนั้นไป
