Surin province has a long history background but there is no certain evidence about the background. It relies on just the presumption of the histories, archaeologists as well as the narration of elders for their generations believing that surin was established some 2000 years ago during the period that the khmer dominated this area. When the khmer was in power decline, Surin was abandoned until the year 1763 it appeared that Luang Surin Phakdi (chiangpum) who was formerly a leader of Muang Thi village, had asked Pimai governor to ask permission from King Phrathinang Suriyamint to move a village from Ban Muang Thi to Ban Khu Prathai where Surin city is presently situated due to it was a proper favorable site surrounded by 2 tiers of walls and moat, with plenty of water suitable for occupation and living. Later on, as a result of merits of Luang surin phakdi, Ban Khu Prathai was graciously upgraded to Muang Prathai Saman and the title of Luang Surin Phakdi was promoted to Phraya Surin Phakdi Sri Narongf Chang Wang, the Governor.

In 1786 King Rama I has graciously renamed Muang Prathai Saman as Muang Surin after title of its governor.

Surin Province is located in the southern part of the northeastern region, 450 kilometers far from Bangkok by car and 420 kilometers by train with the total areas of about 8124 square kilometers of about 5,077,535 rais and populations around 1,404,252 people.
